Once again JC and I sit down to review our adventures and set plans for hikes and road races! This time, we inspect our intended packs for our upcoming Snow Mountain hike at the end of May (weather permitting)! Grab a beverage of your choice and add your thoughts in the comment section!

After a little teaser about my backpack, we cover my recent overnight urban trek in the Mazu Pilgrimage...There are actually more than one of these going on in Taiwan! Check out the amazing footage of the Baishatun Pilgrims run Mazu into a temple amidst the excited crowd. (The clip was forwarded by my sister-in-law. Sorry, I do not know the source to give credit!). These pilgrimages are among the largest and oldest annual treks on the planet! Next, JC details a particularly nasty danger out on the mountains paths this time of year and gives his race plans.

If you got that far, thanks for sticking with us for my hiking pants review and a side-by-side comparison of our backpacks, the Deuter Trail Pro 36 vs. JC's eight-year-old Futura 42. My Deuter Trail Pro 36 was listed as NT$4950 ($165), but I got it on sale at 20% off. It features "Aircontact" open-cell foam where the pack meets your back, flexible (meaning slightly rotating left & right) "ActiveFit" shoulder straps fitting "any body shape" which include carabiner holders, hip fins/belt with pockets, an elastic spring-steel frame, stabilizer straps, side pockets (One zip & one water bottle holder), a rain cover located on the underside, cranium top pocket with SOS-label & additional zip pocket on its underside, ice ax and pole loops, H20 bladder compartment with water hole for tube, large exterior pocket for rain gear or wet pouch, and two-way (top or bottom) zip entry to main pack.

JC's Futura 42 is holding up well after eight years of adventures. His pack is slightly larger and features a webbing to create a cooling effect for your back. There are upper straps and lower protective side pockets for the heads poles and an ice ax. The shoulder and waist straps are comfortable foam. His pack says "Atunas, Deuter designed" and the Futura line of backpacks is still sold (as of writing) by Deuter.

Both packs should do well carrying our gear on an overnight hike up Snow Mountain, Taiwan's second highest peak. As it is starting to get hot right now in Taiwan, you can still get high up in the mountains to cool off! In addition to Snow, we touch upon some of the other top mountains on this island over 3000 meters. Lastly, JC starts to get the wheels turning about a December Ultramarathon in Miaoli!

Coconut Chocolate Granola
Start your day with something sweet with this backpacking-friendly Coconut Chocolate Granola.

This vegetarian breakfast is loaded with nearly 500 calories per serving while remaining super lightweight. Half the calories come from easily-accessible carbohydrates while the other half come from slower burning fats & protein, providing blend of rapid energy for now and long burning fuel for later.

As far as DIY granolas go, this one is relatively simple to make at home. It uses pretty standard ingredients like rolled oats, coconut flakes, chopped nuts, cacao powder, maple syrup, and coconut oil. Once combined, place the spread on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes at 300F. Like with all DIY granola, there’s a very thin line between perfectly baked and overbaked, so be sure to set a timer!

Before you take this (or any meal really) into the backcountry, we definitely recommend making a small batch and testing it at home. You want to be confident you’re onboard with your meals before committing to them. Once you get the recipe dialed into your liking, then you can make a large batch to save for later.

If you enjoy your granola with a bit of milk, than a powdered milk is the way to go. When you portion out your granola into resealable containers or baggies, just add 1 tablespoon of powdered milk. Once out on the trail, just add water, shake, and voila: Granola with Milk!

Faster than instant oatmeal and loaded with more calories too, if you’re looking for a new backpacking breakfast to get your morning started, than this Coconut Chocolate Granola is for you!

Coconut Chocolate Granola
Makes 4 servings

1 cup rolled oats
1 cup coconut flakes
½ cup chopped nuts
¼ cup cacao powder
¼ cup maple syrup
3 tablespoons melted coconut oil
pinch of salt
4 tablespoons powdered whole milk
1 oz freeze dried raspberries (or other freeze dried fruit)

Preheat oven to 300F
In a large bowl, combine the oats, coconut flakes, nuts, cacao powder, maple syrup, and salt until everything is evenly coated.
Spread the mixture in an even layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove & let cool.
Divide the granola between 4 zip top bags. Add 1 tablespoon powdered milk and ¼ oz freeze dried raspberries to each bag.
In camp, add ½ cup water (hot or cold) to the bag and mix. Enjoy!
