Every snowboarder gets some base damage at some point. Big holes that expose the core usually need to be repaired at a shop, but smaller scrapes and gouges can easily be fixed at home. We’ll show you how to prep your base, fill the scrapes with P-Tex and smooth out the base when you’re done. Transcript:
Everyone gets some base damage at some point. Big holes that expose the core usually need to be repaired by a shop equipped to weld in new base material, but smaller scrapes and gouges can easily be fixed at home. You'll need clean towels, base cleaner, rubbing alcohol, a metal scraper and a P-tex candle. You might also need a wire brush and a razor blade.
The repair will work best on a clean base. Start by using your scraper to remove any extra base material from around the gouge. Stubborn spots may need a razor. Brush off any dirt, debris or built up wax. As always, make sure you brush and scrape from tip to tail. P-tex won't stick well to a wax base so use base cleaner around the scrape to remove wax from the area. After a couple minutes the base cleaner will have done its job and cleared the base of wax. Now you can use rubbing alcohol and a cleaning towel to remove residual base cleaner.
Light the P-tex candle over your scraper to keep it from dripping on your work area. As it heats you may need to relight it a couple times until it's hot enough to drip regularly. Hold the candle as close as possible to the gouge without letting it touch. If it's to high the P-tex will be dirtier and may splash off your base. If it's to close the flame may burn your base. Let it drip in until the hole is completely filled. You can use your metal scraper to sharpen the candle when it starts to droop, and of course, never cross a lit candle over your skin. When all the gouges are filled, stub out the candle on your scraper and set it aside to cool. Keep in mind that it will stay hot for quite a while. It's normal for the repair to look bumpy and uneven at this point.
Once the base is cooled you can use a metal scraper to remove the excess P-tex for a smooth, flush finish. You can also check for any low spots that you may have missed. Just repeat the process to fill them in. To recap, clean the base and remove extra base material from around the gouge. Drip P-tex into the hole and allow it to cool completely. Once it's cooled, use a metal scraper to remove extra P-tex and create a smooth finish. Once the base is finished, it's time to give it a good wax.

I tried to do an entire backpacking trip for $200 or less! Over the course of ten years working in the outdoor industry, I’ve had access to affordable, high-quality gear and been able to test and ask questions from the experts around me before choosing to buy. I’m so grateful for this experience, but I know that for many people, backpacking and hiking can be quite an investment. I challenged myself to start from square one, acquire all my backpacking gear and take a trip - all for under $200! If you have an REI near you where you can rent gear, I highly recommend that. $200 is enough to take an amazing backpacking trip with great gear if you have access to REI rentals, but for this challenge I decided to see how far I could get without renting anything. Watch the video to see how that turned out... :) I hope you enjoy my $200 budget backpacking adventure!

Waxing your snowboard is the best way to protect the base and keep you gliding fast over snow. In this video, we give you a quick, step-by-step guide to waxing your snowboard at home. Shop REI’s selection of snowboard tuning equipment at http://www.rei.com/c/snowboard-tuning-and-tools

Transcript:
Waxing your board regularly is the best way to protect it and keep it performing at it's peak. You'll need clean towels, rubbing alcohol, your favorite wax, a plastic scraper, a set of brushes, and a waxing iron. Because the iron you use at home could burn the wax or your base, it's best to use a specifically designed waxing iron. Place your board on your vice. If you don't have a vice you can use a couple stacks of books to balance it. Make sure your bindings are tucked out of the way. Use rubbing alcohol and a clean towel to prepare the base for wax. If your base is visibly dirty, brush it off with a wire brush before using the alcohol. As always, make sure you brush, wax, and scrape from tip to tail.
Heat up your iron until it's just warm enough to melt the wax. Then drip a zigzag line of wax up and down the board. If the wax begins to smoke the iron is too hot. Let it cool before starting again. Work the wax into the ski from tip to tail, and make sure it reaches the edges. If it doesn't, add more wax. Keeping your air moving at an even speed is key. You should see a trail of molten wax about 3 to 5 inches behind the iron. If you move too fast the wax won't fully penetrate into the base. If you're too slow you could burn or blister the base material. After three or four passes with the iron, you should feel warmth through the top sheet. Let the whole board cool completely back to room temperature.
Once the board is cooled use a plastic scraper at a 45 degree angle to scrape off the excess wax. Use long overlapping strokes with firm, even pressure, and move from side to side to cover the whole base. Because most boards are slightly cupped, you may need to flex the scraper to get to the wax in the middle. You know you're done scraping when you're not getting any more wax shavings. You'll want to remove the wax from the sidewalls and edges as well. Make sure to use the short end of the scraper so you don't dull the scraping ends. Next comes the brushing. The base of your board has tiny channels called structure which move water out as you ride. Brushing clears the wax from the structure. Make several full-length tip to tail passes using your nylon brush. Use good even pressure and keep brushing until you're no longer seeing wax dust coming off.
Finish up with a good polish with your horsehair brush. The more passes you make the better the result. You can't brush too much. To recap, start with a clean base. Spread wax thoroughly over the whole base. Scrape the extra wax off, and finish up with your brushes.

Sprained ankles are among the most common injuries on the trail, and if it happens to you or someone you’re with, you can tape the ankle to add support until you get back to civilization. All you need is a roll of athletic tape and the right know-how. We partnered with NOLS Wilderness Medicine to teach you how to tape an ankle by placing a landmark strip of tape above the injury, then adding stirrups, teardrops and figure 8s.

Each fall our skies fill with the wings of migrating raptors. This ancient migration spans two hemispheres, binding our backyards to the forests of the far north and the wildest corners of South America. A network of volunteers and biologists stand ready to document each pulse of the migration by collecting data that may arm us with the means to better understand the health and wellbeing of these wayward fliers and the landscapes that sustain them. Sky Migrations is a film about a journey that embeds us in this epic migration for a brief moment, telling the stories of those who, with eyes cast skyward, tuck themselves atop mountains to help ensure that October skies may continue to flood with raptors, and that wilderness itself lives on.
